Great Ormond Street Hospital wish to appoint a Cellular Scientist in Myology who can take on the shared responsibility for operational delivery of the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre Muscle Pathology Service, including the Highly Specialised Service/National Specialist Commissioned Team for congenital muscular dystrophies and congenital myopathies. Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant cellular science subject. The muscle pathology service is based within the Division of Neuropathology, UCL Institute of Neurology and works alongside the clinical neuromuscular team at Great Ormond Street and research team at the Institute of Child Health. The three teams are part of the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre, a leading Paediatric centre for the diagnosis and development of novel therapies for childhood neuromuscular diseases.

This is a fixed term appointment for up to 24 months.

The post holder will be expected to acquire full knowledge and expertise in performing all the routine diagnostic work, and share responsibility for operational delivery of the muscle pathology service. The post holder will be expected to develop novel techniques and assays that will improve diagnostic/prognostic yield from assessment of tissue samples and serve as outcome measures in clinical trials in the field.

The post holder will be expected to undertake functional studies aimed at understanding pathogenicity of novel variants identified through next generation sequencing platforms and undertake translational research with a focus on developing, validating and implementing novel diagnostic tools and techniques in the diagnostic pathway to advance the diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases. This is an area in which the Centre is at the national and international forefront, both in terms of the definition of novel entities and the implementation of their diagnosis in the accredited laboratories; and in the translational research including the development and assessment of outcomes of novel therapies

The post holder will be expected to work towards full registration with the UK Health and Care Professions Council.
