Gunnar Buyse

Gunnar Buyse (MD, PhD) is Professor of Pediatrics and Child Neurology at the University of Leuven (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven), and is deputy clinical chair of Child Neurology at the University Hospitals Leuven. Gunnar Buyse is a Committee Member of the TREAT-NMD Advisory Committee for Therapeutics (TACT).His clinical and research interests cover the entire spectrum of child neurology. Gunnar Buyse has extensive experience in basic, translational and clinical research. He holds a PhD in basic medical sciences (molecular biology and biophysics). His group has contributed to preclinical phases of drug development, by doing very long-term randomized controlled ‘clinical preclinical’ studies in animal models of muscular dystrophies. He has been/is principal or co-investigator of several clinical randomised controlled trials (including international multicentric, registration-directed, pharmacological and genetic) in the field of pediatric neuromuscular diseases. As such he has the unique expertise of bringing basic sciences first to the preclinical stage and then to gold-standard investigational human clinical trials. His group has also a particular interest in cardiac and respiratory outcome measures in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
