EVELAM 2012 - meeting report

Echoes of the V Euro-Latin-American Summer School of Myology

On December 13 through 15, 2012, the V Euro-Latin-American Summer School in Myology (EVELAM) was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, locally organized by Dr. Fabiana Lubieniecki, Dr. Marcelo Rugiero, and Dr. Soledad Monges. The main aim of the meeting was to continue enhancing the knowledge on neuromuscular diseases in Latin America, as well as to give an update on selected topics in the field.

The course was addressed to health professionals with a special interest in neuromuscular diseases, i.e., medical doctors, biologists, and physical therapists.

The following topics were presented: Diagnostic and therapeutic approach of the neuromuscular patient; Imaging in muscular pathologies; Muscular dystrophies in children and adults; Congenital myopathies, metabolic myopathies, motor neuron diseases, immune mediated myopathies and neuropathies, myasthenia gravis and cardiomyopathies.

The course was held over 3 days from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with update lectures, a physical therapy workshop, clinicopathological case discussion workshops including cases presented by pupils, and a round table on Pompe’s disease, among others. One afternoon was reserved for a session on congenital muscular dystrophy discussing clinical aspects, management and registry.

Especially invited were parent associations (FAME Argentina, FAME Chile, and the Argentine Association of Muscular Atrophy (AAMA)) who presented their achievements and projects. The  contributions these associations have made to the Summer School were particularly valuable.

We could count on the support and participation of the International Scientific Committee consisting of J. Andoni Urtizberea (France), Dr. Norma B. Romero (France), Dr. Enrico Bertini (Italy), Dr. Eduardo Tizzano (Spain); Dr. Edmar Zanoteli (Brazil), Dr. Jorge A. Bevilacqua (Chile), Dr. Alberto L. Rosa (Argentina); Dr Mario Medici (Uruguay), Dr. Ana Lia Taratuto (Argentina), and the Euro-Latin-American Group of Myology (GrELAM).

The course was held completely in Spanish with guest speakers coming from Europe (France, Italy, Switzerland, and Spain), North América (USA, Canada) and Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay)

Since the first Summer School held in Santiago, Chile, in 2008, there has been a steadily growing interest in the field.  This year 172 participants from Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Argentina attended the meeting.

EVELAM has provided an opportunity for exchange of knowledge and continuous training between Latin America and Europe to advance the care, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with neuromuscular diseases.
